Abstract

Mt Merapi is one of the most active vulcano in the world. This vulcanos has a unique character on sediment transport phenomena. A huge mass of material flowing fastly from the upstream of Gendol River to the Watu Adem area just after the latest erupsion of 14th of June 2006. Such kind of mechanism can happen anytime, not only in rainy season but also in dry season as well. In this case, the rainfall intensity plays a significant role not only on triggering and migrating sediment but also determining the level of damages. This paper presented the effect of rainfall intensity and its fluctuation due to climate changes to the sediment migration process. The point of view of this study are identifying the sediment accumulation in upstream Gendol River, analysing rainfall characteristic, analysing recorded data of debris flow after erupsion, damaged created by debris flow and the analysis of their relations. It can be concluded that the cumulative rainfall and rainfall intensity at the day of the debris flow event is the most important parameter on creating the sediment migration pattern. Based on rainfall characteristic analysis on the day of debris flow occurs, a critical flow can be drawn as a boundary of the occurrence of debris flow. Since the rainfall intensity will be change year to year, the sediment migration pattern will follow the rainfall characteristics as well. KEYWORDS : sediment migration pattern, cumulative rainfall, rainfall intensity, debris flow.
