Abstract
This research was aimed to find ambiguity in Manadonese Malay utterances. Theories of Hartman (1973:11), explained that ambiguity is a construction marked by multiple interpretations; Lyons (1977:38), explained that every lexeme can produce more than one meaning. Method and technique used based on Sudaryanto’s (1993:62, 133-135) theory. It explained that the research data taken from the utterances by the speakers and the data were collected by using observant participatory.
The result was the utterances could be misunderstood by the hearers if they neither involve directly with the conversation nor understand the local culture or local custom.
Meaning interpretation will always exist in informal conversation. Informal conversation is always brief, clear, irregular but understandableeasily. It also has the implicit meaning and avoid misunderstanding interpretation if the people involved in the conversation accustomed to local culture.
