Abstract

The design of the Innovation Center at Sam Ratulangi University is an urgency in the scope of the world of education related to the development of science and technology, where Sam Ratulangi University (UNSRAT) is a university that has a big role in research and service related to innovation, especially in the city of Manado. In addition, UNSRAT itself has extensive potential from various resources that support in an effort to increase opportunities for innovation in order to compete not only on a national scale but also on an international scale. Although UNSRAT itself is still included as a State University with the status of Public Service Agency (PTN-BLU), it does not rule out the opportunity for the future UNSRAT can continue to grow so that it has full autonomy rights in financial management and available resources with the status of Legal Entity (PTN-BH). However, UNSRAT still does not have a forum that can accommodate and support the development of innovation in the UNSRAT environment, so that in an effort to encourage the development and quality of innovation in UNSRAT is still not optimal. Therefore, the intention of the design of the Innovation Center at UNSRAT is to optimize the empowerment of existing resources by presenting a place that facilitates the development of innovation at Sam Ratulangi University. The design process and method applied to the design is the IDEO design process proposed by the Brown team (2008), the “design thinking” method by the Brown team has 3 main stages in the process, i.e.; inspiration, ideation, and implementation. The IDEO design process method focuses on a “human-centric” approach to problems that are fundamental to the customer. The IDEO design process applies design stages that use creative activities to encourage collaboration and human-centered problem solving, so that in the process it generates many ideas which are then further studied in order to solve essential problems. This method can help in designing Innovation Center objects that require ideas and inspiration in various aspects that need to be considered in each stage of the design. The design of the Innovation Center object is a response to problem solving related to the container to accommodate innovation development activities in the field of science and technology at Sam Ratulangi University by optimizing existing facilities, especially in forming a container that can support collaboration activities and brainstorming that occurs directly through maximum utilization of various resources. And supported by the application of the theme “Affective Atmosphere and Embodied Encounters” in creating a reciprocal relationship between the atmosphere related to human feelings and responses phenomenologically to support the psychological users of objects in innovating that encourage user interest and creativity with the built environment in the design of the Sam Ratulangi University Innovation Center. Keywords: Sam Ratulangi, Innovation, Atmosphere, Affective, Embodied Encounters.
