Abstract

Expression of our genes can be changed by environment and our lifestyles, and this might affect the health of our offsprings. This change is referred to as epigenetics. Epigenetics is a structural modifications on genes that does not involve the change in its nucleotide sequences yet control and regulate gene expression. Many health problems can be caused by the changes in epigenetic marks, for example switching on/off of tumor-supressor genes. Interaction of all these factors influencing gene expression are complex but epigenetic modifications in eukaryotic cells are primarily mediated via two modes: histone modification and DNA methylation. Persistent adaptations of infants to nutrition, for example, may influence their susceptibility to later chronic disease when they are adults, and this is potentially caused by alterations in DNA methylation. This will affect how genes are switched off or on, causing message for longevity to become switched off or on. Some of these genes may stay switched off or on for a long time while others rapidly shift between active and inactive expression. Individual with metabolic syndrome experiences false epigenetic reprogramming during fetal development due to lack of nutrition and/ or maternal metabolic disturbance. This phenotype due to incomplete erasure of epigenetic marks is inhereted, meaning that the organism shows transgenerational effect. Epigenetics, however, is not only about passing on potentially health risks, but also healthy factors. It means that individual is genetically predisposed. In essence, shifts in gene expresssion affects physiological, psychological, and physical attributes. Organisms are able to respond to environment through changes in gene expression, and these changes are actually influenced by biochemical, physchological, and environmental factors.
