Abstract
An ideal way to reduce solid household organic waste is home composting. Composting is a manipulation of biological process to transform raw organic waste into compost. Microorganisms play important roles in composting process, therefore proper environmental conditions must be met for decomposition to succeed. The initial step is to know which of the waste that can and cannot be put into a compost bin (composter). The Green Foundation has introduced how to effectively make compost from household organic waste by developing its own activator, starter, and composter (biogrEEn composter). An activator contains a proprietary blend of microorganisms that help speeding the decomposition process, while starter is the source of nutrient (energy source) that serves to jump start the process. BiogrEEn composter has a capacity of composting 30 kg domestic organic waste. The result of using this composter is compost (12 kg) and liquid organic fertilizer (1%) in 7 days, with the significantly improvement in the quality of the finished product.
