Abstract

The sediment of Progo river is came from a number of tributaries originated at Merapi. In the wet seasons, the material produced by eruption in the form of volcanic sedimentation will be transported and came down to settle in the middle and downstream part of the river. The large fluctuation in stream flow has caused the intensity of transported sediment also fluctuated in accord with the changes in flow. The sediment transport mechanism is followed by the erosion (agradation) and sedimentation (degradation) processes. The existing sabo works for controlling lava has already been retained most of the eruption material, so as the inflow of sediment to Progo river has been reduced. Based on this phenomenon, it need to be examined the hydraulic characteristics and performances of the downstream part of Progo river in connection with the existing erosion and sedimentation. On the other hand, the mining of C type excavated material, conducted not bonly in the slope of Merapi, but also along the Progo river, has also made the condition worse. A hydraulic study is conducted to understand the phenomenon of erosion and sedimentation occurred naturally in the river, disregarding the influence of human activities (such as the mining of C type excavated material). The method of study is to determine a number of sections in the downstream part of the river which has problems with erosion and sedimentation. For this purpose, it needs the data of river geometry and stream flow and sediment characteristics. The information about the natural phenomenon is the remarkable factor from the so many influencing factors of the erosion and sedimentation processes. It is hoped that the result from this study can provide a depiction (based on hydraulic approach) about the natural phenomenon of erosion and sedimentation in the downstream of Progo river, which in turn can produce a certain paradigm for exploitation and management of Progo river as one of the much used potential water resources. Key words : sediment characteristics, erosion, sedimentation.
