Abstract
Current procedure of rearing preleptocephalus larvae of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) is using a kind of slurry diet made from shark-egg as a primary dietary source. However, as the shark (spiny dogfish) population around world is being seriously depleted, it is necessary to find a new dietary source other than shark egg for the eel larvae. It has been previously reported that only soft and small food particle can pass through to intestine due to its special histological characteristics: narrow oesophagus without mucus cells. In present study, various minute zooplankton species belongs to rotifer (Proales similis, Synchaeta sp., Keratella sp., SS-type Brachionus plicatilis, Brachionus anguralis) and copepod (Paracyclopina nana) were tried for possible ingestion of the eel larvae on 6, 7, 8 and 14 days post-hatch (DPH). Among the zooplanktons offered, incidence of ingestion of eel larvae on 6, 7 and 8 DPH was observed only on P. similis, Synchaeta sp. and SS-type B. plicatilis, with percent incidence of ingestion were 20.0 - 46.7%, 0 - 6.7%, and 0 - 13.3%, respectively. Percent incidence of ingestion of the larvae on 14 DPH was 100% on P. similis while it was 20.0%, 13.3%, 53.3%, 6.7% and 0% for Synchaeta sp., Keratella sp., SS-type B. plicatilis, B. anguralis and P. nana, respectively. The larvae ingested P. similis showed larger occupied area by ingested food in gut of the larvae (1.8 - 39.4% gut area) than those offered with other zooplanktons (0 - 0.9% gut area) during the experiment.
